Dear Friends,
I’ve discovered a powerful way to refocus my energy in the new year without creating a set of resolutions. Rather than listing all the ways I hope to change, I’ve instead decided to pick just one single word for the new year and use it as a “filter” for all that I do. For example, two years ago, I chose the word “INSPIRE” and decided I would only do things that make me feel inspired or inspire others, or ideally both. Whenever I was faced with a decision, I pulled out my filter word and asked myself whether it would make me or others feel inspired. If not, I didn’t do it. Of course, there were exceptions, but as a way of quickly making a decision, it worked great. So great, that I used the same word for a second year!
This year, I’m choosing the word “JOY”. Whenever I hear people talk about all that is going wrong these days, I remind myself that in every moment we are also surrounded by the potential for immense joy. Like being able to hug my boys, or stroll along the ocean, or drink a glass of wine and laugh with friends.
Picking just one single word to focus on for the whole year and making it a filter for all that you do can be really a powerful tool. So that’s my gift to you this year. If you do just one thing this new year to refocus your energy, do this. It’s simple. It’s powerful. And it may just change your life.
