Dear Friends,
October is often one of the most beautiful times to visit Carmel. The days are sunny and warm and the evenings cool, perfect sleeping weather. This October hasn’t disappointed. But a couple of things have made this year’s October even more special than ever. First, the whales. These incredible creatures are drawn toward Carmel due to the nutrient rich Monterey deep water canyon just off shore that reaches over two miles deep - nearly TWICE the depth of the Grand Canyon of Arizona - and is home to some of the most diverse marine life in the world. We are visited by almost every type of whale imaginable from gray whales, blue whales, sperm, and orcas.
About a week ago, I was taking my walk along the Carmel promenade when I saw a pod of whales only about a mile into the bay breaching out of the water in a magnificent display of merrymaking, flukes in full view, plumes of mist every few minutes. In ten years of living in Carmel, I’ve never witnessed such a spectacular scene from shore. It was indescribable.
And if that weren’t enough to convince me that Carmel is truly a magical place, the other night the sky lit up under the northern lights of Aurora Borealis with glowing hues of magenta and purple, dancing like a fire against a black midnight sky. I was literally awestruck by the improbable beauty of this world we are so blessed to live in - gargantuan creatures dancing around us, heavens like a glowing canopy above. I believe that dreams really do come true in Carmel.
I am so thankful to have shared this cottage, where I’ve raised twin baby boys to their currently rebellious and boisterous age of 12, with the most wonderful guests who have brought love and peace and memories into this home. I invite each of you back whenever the timing is right to once again experience a walk along the ocean, the mountain hikes, a stroll home in the chill foggy mist after a nice dinner out, the wine tasting rooms hidden within secret courtyards, or an outing to your favorite boutique shops along ocean avenue. Let Carmel enter your dreams once again, and may all your dreams come true.
