The Top Carmel Restaurants
Nestled along the coast of California, just north of Big Sur, lies the storybook village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. This unique destination occupies just over one square mile of space, packed with natural charm and timeless appeal. Cleverly tucked among Carmel's signature cottages, courtyard nooks, and passageways, you'll discover the secret to the culture of Carmel - the original, culinary delights that showcase and define the bounty of the Northern California harvest.
Taking full advantage of the thriving farms, ranches, and vibrant waters nearby, Carmel hosts an array of endearing eateries that have perfected the art of "California fusion" through conscious efforts toward locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients for a quality, farm-to-table (or sea-to-table) experience. Menus are often seasonal in nature, to highlight the freshest ingredients at their peak. So, while some staples may remain on the regular rotation, you're sure to have new flavors to tantalize your palate time and time again.
While we like to consider some of the best local options to be genuine "hidden gems", the word is out and foodie circles are all a-buzz about the range of innovative offerings in Carmel. It's always wise to book reservations in advance whenever possible - especially during dinner service and weekends. Here are some of our favorites!
Aubergine
Aubergine is home of the 8-course tasting menu, expertly crafted by award-winning executive Chef Justin Cogley and pastry Chef Yulanda Santos. The lavish eatery has received a five-star rating by Forbes Travel Guide as well as a Michelin star, and is widely revered as one of the best restaurants in Carmel. Dinner pairings feature selections from a 2,500-bottle wine cellar, ranging in regional scope from as near as Monterey County to as far as France. Opt for indoor dining where rich, warm tones embrace you, or choose courtyard dining outdoors. Aubergine also offers catering services.

Flaherty’s Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar
It's two restaurants in one, and a perfect choice for next-level, fresh seafood favorites. While both sides lean a bit to the Carmel-version of casual , the oyster bar is more relaxed with a full-service bar and TV, while the seafood grill is a bit more "refined" with a large saltwater aquarium, soft music, and table linens. Guests may order from the full restaurant menu while at the oyster bar, but the fresh oysters are a hard dish to pass up! Prepared in a slew of ways - from the traditional Rockefeller, to the entirely unique BBQ - the oysters (typically Kumomoto, Hama's, or Blue Point) are delivered fresh daily from the cool waters off British Columbia, California, Washington State and the East Coast.

Classic European fare is always on the menu in the heart of downtown Carmel at La Bicyclette, where the Georis family has been a fixture since 1974. Paying tribute to childhood and the freeing frivolity of bicycle riding, La Bicyclette is the kind of place you just want to be - regardless of what's on the menu.
